BlackBerry Bold 9780 Review
The BlackBerry Bold continues BlackBerry’s reputation for delivering exceptional smart phones and personal communication devices. The handset offers the staple full QWERTY keyboard with raised peaks and well spaced keys to allow for efficient typing with two hands that users have come to expect from RIM.
The glossy exterior makes the 9780 a very handsome handset, designed to fit nicely in hand with a strong build quality and with a nice thickness in the hand and a sumptuous faux leather on the battery cover making the phone easy to grip and secure when you hold it.
The front of the phone features the crisp bright 480×360 pixel screen above the call, menu, back and end buttons with the optical trackpad in the centre and the keyboard below.
The left side of the phone offers the 3.5mm headphone port, the micro-USB connection for charging and synchronising and the voice dialling function button.
The right side provides the volume keys and a short cut key to the improved 5MP camera.
The top of the phone is home to the lock/unlock key and mute button.
The introduction of the BlackBerry OS6 is fully supported by the increased 512MB of RAM inside with quick access points which offer immediate access to connectivity settings, the alarm clock, the ringer/vibration settings and the new Universal Search option.
The handset also offers 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 2.44 inch screen and a host of built in apps including the expected BlackBerry Messenger, a new WebKit-based internet browser, universal search and a richer media experience giving the BlackBerry Bold 9780 a marked improvement over previous models.
The most notable new interface feature is the Social Feeds options and integrates all the users online apps such as Twitter, AIM, Windows Live Messenger, FaceBook, Google Talk, BlackBerry Messenger and others into one feed as well as a second screen dedicated to an RSS reader.
This feature can be filtered by service and offers the option of using all the separate applications individually.
Of all the changes in the BlackBerry OS 6, the new WebKit-based browser is one of the most commendable producing a rich web experience with zoom options on loaded pages reflowing fairly quickly.
Call quality on the BlackBerry 9780 is above average, with a nice strong signal and an impressively loud external speaker. BlackBerry users will know that messaging is the focus of RIMís BlackBerry handsets and the 9780 is no different. The Bold 9780 offers a Messaging application which brings together email and social messaging in one view and allows users to compose messages for any of the services such as Twitter, IM and SMS as well as others that are linked through the Social feeds app.
The messaging process is fast and responsive, with text messaging having its own separate application that offers navigating and a comfortable design providing threaded message view.
The improved 5MP camera includes an LED flash, geo-tagging and quick access to mode options such as Face Detection, Sports, Text and Party. Autofocus mode can be set to continuous or single shot and includes a 3x digital zoom.
The BlackBerry Bold 9780 takes 640×480 (VGA) videos at 24fps in 3GP format with fairly impressive quality and the microphone does a very competent job of picking up sound.
The 1500mAh battery inside the Bold 9780 shows in battery life with ample talk time for a smart phone while the 3G and Wi-Fi, the Bluetooth 2.1 and Edge ensure connectivity and speed. The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is a worthy upgrade to RIM’s flagship range with a significant improvement in the new operting system, integrated messaging and improved internet and media experience.
